Foxtel Offering Free iQ For 12 Months

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 4:00 PM on November 14, 2008

foxtel iq1.pngOoh, and the battle between Foxtel and TiVo just keeps getting better. Foxtel have just upped the ante by offering the original iQ PVR for free to new customers for 12 months with no installation fee. That means that if you sign up to Foxtel, you get a free PVR for 12 months, although you'll need to be paying at least $40 a month for the Foxtel service.

They've also introduced an incentive for potential iQ2 subscribers, which includes their four HD channels for free for seven months when you sign up for the iQ2.

There are apparently some special deals going for existing digital subscribers who want to upgrade to iQ in a multi-room capacity as well, but it depends on plans and is a bit confusing, so you're best bet is to call 131999 to get the low-down on what they can offer.

Dealzmodo: Get A Free Copy Of Spore When You Subscribe To Popular Science

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 11:00 AM on November 13, 2008

Pop-Sci.jpgIt's simple mathematics people: A copy of PopSci costs $8.95 on the newstand. A 12 month subscription costs $84.95, which works out at a saving of $22.45 over a year. A copy of Spore will set you back about $90. Which means that if you subscribe to PopSci this month, you'll end up getting $112.45 worth of free stuff for your 85 bucks.

Not only that, but you can enter the mag's other competitions, which include the chance to win a $900 Blu-ray pack, a $900 Tamron lens and a $140 STM bag. That's a lot of value for your purchase, right there.

The timeframe for the free Spore giveaway probably ends fairly soon, so you should get subscribing sooner rather than later...

Don't Fear the Cheap Third-Party Laptop Battery

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 1:00 AM on November 8, 2008

We've been giving you tons of ways to salvage your well-used gadgets as we weather the financiapocalypse, but one thing you can't hack your way out of is needing a new battery for your laptop. Eventually, your battery will wear out to the point it won't even chug through a single YouPorn clip, and by that time (2-3 years), getting a new one direct from your laptopmaker will be obscenely expensive. What to do? Embrace the cheap third-party battery.

Prof. Dealzmodo: Why You Should Buy a Refurbished Laptop

Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:00 AM on November 5, 2008

Yes, there is a stigma associated with buying refurbished laptops. I understand it to a degree—I mean, there is nothing like liberating a fresh, shiny gadget from its plastic packaging prison. What I don't understand is how this stigma exists in a society where buying a used car is so widely accepted. As many others have pointed out, the process of buying a refurb and a used car are actually very similar—except the financial risk we take on with the latter is generally much, much higher. So why are we so hung up on this? We shouldn't be—and here is why.

Dealzmodo: Free Shipping For Brando's Groovy Gadgets

Posted by Kit Eaton at 8:13 PM on November 3, 2008

We love Brando here at the Giz, with its wonderful array of strangely useful, odd and downright weird gizmos. And though Brian didn't quite manage to meet up with its owner recently to discuss all things gadgety, Brando's still got some good news in this economically woeful time: from now until December 31, there's no shipping fee from its online store. So if your significant other is in the running for a USB-powered, aromatherapy, LED-lit, Hello Kitty'd massaging mobile phone charger as a Christmas gift, you know where to shop. [Brando]

Dealzmodo: Download CrossOver Free Today Only

Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:25 AM on October 29, 2008

CrossOver is a nifty program that allows you to run Windows programs in OS X and Linux. And because of some promotion having to do with the price of gas (don't question it), all CrossOver products (including CrossOver Games) are free today and today only. All of the traffic has brought the site to its knees, but you can still download the software and request a serial number. Just make sure to actually register your software by tomorrow or the offer might have disappeared.

AU: Any of you guys test this out to see if it's available for us Aussies? I'm working off a Vista PC today...

Dealzmodo: Get A Free Blu-Ray Player When You Buy A Samsung TV

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 11:00 AM on October 27, 2008

bdp1500sammy.jpgOne of the biggest battles Blu-ray has on its hands (aside from fighting the infinite format war), is that to really take full advantage of its Full HD picture, you need to have a Full HD TV. And those things aren't cheap. That's why Samsung are giving away one of their BD-P1500 Blu-ray players with the purchase of selected Samsung TVs. That way, you get both Blu-ray player and TV at the same time.

Of course, you'll still need to fork out the coin for the actual Blu-ray discs (hint: start with Iron Man - It's frickin' awesome!), and there's a $30 "postage, handling and administration" fee (so it's not really free), but you get something worth $500 for next to nothing, so stop your whinging.

The full list of eligible Samsung TVs is below the fold. The offer is valid up until December 24.

Sony Bundling LittleBigPlanet With PS3

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 2:08 PM on October 17, 2008

Our good friend Seamus is holding the fort over at Kotaku AU at the moment, and has spent today with the people at Sony Australia, learning all about their upcoming products. One that might be of interest to you guys is that from next week, you'll be able to get your Sackboy fix with your new PS3, as Sony are bundling LittleBigPlanet with their PS3 console from October 23.

There won't be any change to that $700 price tag though, so look at it as getting a (good) free game with your PS3 purchase.

Economy's Failings Could Result In The Craziest Black Friday Yet

Posted by John Mahoney at 10:45 PM on October 15, 2008

As you may have heard, economically speaking, things have been better both here and abroad. But, as you should always whistle in times of trouble, "always look on the brooight side of life." But as the NYTimes reports today, the CE industry downturn that has already brought Circuit City to its knees could have a somewhat dark and depressing...upside--an extended Black Friday with discounts unlike any the world has yet seen.

Dealzmodo: Asus Eee Box And VW161D LCD Monitor For $599

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 6:55 PM on October 14, 2008

asus eeebox and monitor.jpgIf you're after a cheap and easy desktop computer, the Eee Box just became a lot more attractive with the announcement that Asus are now bagging it with their VW161D LCD monitor for just $599.

Considering the Eee Box was $429 when it launched back in August, that means you're getting a 16-inch widescreen monitor for $170, which isn't a bad deal at all.

The package is apparently available at computer resellers now, which could mean anything really, but it's still worth keeping an eye out for.

Dealzmodo: Samsung Blu-Ray Player to Hit $149 on Black Friday

Posted by John Herrman at 7:23 PM on October 13, 2008

You might want to hold off on buying a Blu-ray player for a few weeks, because thankfully, finally, seriously, and almost too-latedly, Blu-ray players will soon drop into truly affordable territory. A source close to Ultimate Electronics has told us to expect the Samsung BD-P1500 — usually about $400 — for $149 on this particularly welcome and poignant Black Friday. Ultimate Electronics is a primarily Midwestern chain, but look to be offering this deal in cooperation with Samsung — in other words, it's probably not the only place you'll see stupidly cheap Blu-ray players come November 28th. -Thanks, Carmel and Matt!

AU: Thought this would be interesting to post for you guys, even though I doubt it will translate across the Pacific.

Anti-Dealzmodo: New iPods Don't Qualify for Apple Back to School Promo

Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:16 PM on September 10, 2008

If you tuned into Giz yesterday, you may have noticed, if you looked really hard, that Apple released a few new iPods. And if you are a college student, maybe you realised that since the new iPods were available as of yesterday, they slipped right in for Apple's Back to School promotion (buy a new Mac, get an 8GB nano/touch free) that goes through Sept 15th. Unfortunately, a call to Apple retail revealed that Apple will not be honouring new iPods in this deal despite similar pricing. Sorry, college kids, I guess you'll just have to be happy with copious amounts of casual sex and inexpensive beer instead. [robreed]

Amazon Cancels Orders for US$40 Sharp Aquos HDTVs

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 12:25 AM on September 9, 2008

Whether the Dealzmodo of the Century, a 52-inch Sharp Aquos HDTV for the eye-popping price of US$38.42, was a cockup or just a scammy scam, Amazon is now actively cancelling orders placed with affiliate myOfficeSource, whose Amazon storefront appears to be totally cleared out. So even if you did get your order in before Amazon stopped taking them, don't expect a giant TV to show up at your door. But at least you're not getting charged. Here's the full email:

52-Inch Sharp Aquos HDTV for US$38.45 (Or Not Really)

Posted by Jesus Diaz at 12:12 PM on September 7, 2008

Right now, one of the stores at Amazon.com--myOfficeSource--is selling a 52-inch Sharp Aquos 1080P HDTV for US$38.45 (thirty-eight dollars and forty-five cents). That's US$2,261.54 off its list price. New, not refurbished. Obviously, something wrong--or fishy--must be happening because, right now, you can buy a bunch of products with this discount. Giz reader Cliff, who gave us the heads up, actually bought the 52-inch Aquos and got a confirmation email from Amazon in which they say his order will arrive in mid-september. Update: One reader is giving a word of caution, so proceed with caution because this may be an scam.

Get A PSP For $35 From Sony Centre Stores

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 12:41 PM on September 1, 2008

Sony have a pretty awesome Father's Day promotion happening for the next week or so where you can pick up a PSP (The Slim and Lite version, not the new 3000 model) for just $35 when you buy selected Sony products from one of their 10 Sony Centre stores around Australia.

What's more, the money all goes to the Sony Foundation, helping developmentally delayed children.

Of course, you'll need to spend some dollars on Sony gear to be eligible - it's valid with selected Home Theatre or Receiver products as well as the TG1 Handycam. But it's still well-worth considering heading into a Sony Centre store if you're in the market for some home theatre kit from Sony, not just to get a cheap PSP, but to help some kids while you're doing it.

Dealzmodo: Bargain Logitech Universal Remotes With $1 Shipping

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 11:57 AM on September 1, 2008

Logitech dealz.pngForget about big screen TVs and surround sound speakers - the real heart of any home theatre setup is the universal remote. If you've never experienced the joy of pressing one button to turn on all the necessary components and select the appropriate inputs, ShoppingSquare has some great deals on Logitech universal remotes.

The Harmony 785, which RRPs for $400, is yours for under $150, while the Harmony One can be yours for $270. Rounding out the offers, you can pick up the Harmony 1000i for $280, down from $700.

To top it all off, they're offering shipping for just $1. If you ever want to own a home theatre setup, this is probably as good a deal as you're ever going to get on a decent universal remote. Sure, they won't do the whole home automation thing, but for this price, could you really expect it?

Dealzmodo: Asus Eee PC With Windows XP for $299

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 1:35 PM on August 7, 2008

eeepc_1.jpgGus over at Lifehacker spotted this one, and frankly it's too good a deal to pass up - Catch of the Day have the Windows XP version of the unstoppable Eee PC 700 for $299.

300 bucks for any computer is a steal, but considering how well received the Eee has been, you'd be a fool to miss this one.

And, as pointed over on Lifehacker, considering they're advertising that the maximum you can order is 10 at a time, there's probably not a shortage of stock in the COTD warehouses. The offer does end at midday tomorrow though, so if you're going to buy, do it now.

Somehow, Original iPhones Going For Up To US$600, Sell Now!

Posted by Matt Hickey at 2:06 PM on July 11, 2008

Many people have been waiting for the eve of the iPhone 3G's introduction to pounce on cheap first generation iPhones on eBay and Craigslist. These people are upset. For some reason, contrary to what you'd think, first generation iPhones are going for astronomical prices. Craigslist is full of people offering up to US$600 for 16GB iPhones and up to US$400 for 8GB models. The arrival of the app store might be part of it, and the fact that it'll be harder to get a 3G iPhone without contract, but $600 for a 16GB iPhone is crazy. Who wants to buy my iPod touch?

Dealzmodo: Free Sirius Radio With Purchase of Lamborghini

Posted by Mark Wilson at 11:00 PM on June 24, 2008

For most of us, the deciding factor against getting satellite radio are those pesky subscription costs. Now Sirius has just signed a deal with Automobili Lamborghini to offer the car customers free lifetime service of Sirius. One word of caution: The deal starts with the 2009 MurciƩlago. So make sure you don't buy a 2008 Lamborghini only to find yourself jacked with huge, unexpected fees.

AU: I'd very much doubt that this is for Aussies, but if anybody out there is looking to buy a 2009 Lamborghini, feel free to let us know.
[Edmunds] Thanks Frank!
