Samsung’s Armani 2 Night Effect Mobile Phone Forgets to Include Stylishness

7:24PM Kit Eaton | Samsung’s original Armani phone was a tiny, touchscreen, haptic-feedback gizmo, and actually not bad looking at all: so I’m confused about the upcoming Armani 2 Night Effect. It’s a plain candybar mobile phone, emblazoned with large Emporio Armani emblems and it seems to have totally forgone attempts at simple stylishness. Get this—around the edge of the phone there’s a red, green or blue-LED glowing strip, presumably the “night effect” part. Maybe it’s my impression of what style is, but that’s just tacky. The specs of the phone aren’t too amazing either. More »

Samsung and Armani Launch HDTVs That Look… Like Every Other HDTV

2:34AM Matt Buchanan | The Samsung/Armani design train keeps rolling, now from mobiles to HDTVs. Today in Milan, Sammy and Giorgio showed off the first Armani LCD TVs—a 46-incher and a 52-inch model. Both are 100Hz “Full HD” sets (hopefully that means 1080p, not 1080i), and will strut their stuff in Europe, Korea and Russia this summer. The fashionable part is apparently the customisable Samsung and Armani logos. Ooooo… Oh, and it’s got two remotes, a mini-pebble for basic functions, and a swankier one that does everything, but we don’t have any pics of ‘em yet. No price, but it’s probably stupid expensive. Sliding Glass Phone is Low on Features, High on Glass In Your Face

9:40AM Jason Chen | Designer Chris Owens has come up with a fashion phone that’s even slicker (and lacking in features) than the LG Prada or the Samsung Armani phones. The design’s appealing because it’s got a giant screen on the front (much like the Prada or the iPhone), but has an illuminated glass dialpad that slides out from the bottom. Yes, it looks like you can pretty much only call or text message people with the phone, but fashionistas don’t bother with emails. Video “demo” after the jump. [Chris Owens via Yanko Design] More »

Samsung i900 Touchscreen Phone with Gesture Control?

11:20AM Sean Fallon | Word on the street is that Samsung is developing the i900 — a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional device complete with a touchscreen. However, unlike the F490, the i900 is expected to feature a full-fledged touchscreen that could include iPhone-esque gesture controls. More »

Samsung Year-End Report Card: A

8:30AM Wilson Rothman | Samsung has grown to be such a household name that we rarely stop to think about exactly how freaking massive the company has become. Other Asian conglomerates can have their snowmobiles, trains and heavy industrial equipment, Samsung plays it straight up the consumer-electronics path. In fact, we defy you to name a CE category Samsung doesn’t have at least some piece of. In order to judge ol’ Sammy’s performance this year, we have to look into a lot of key areas. More »

TAG Heuer Set to Develop Luxury Mobile Phone Line: Does Tiger Woods Need More Money?

10:40AM Sean Fallon | According to the folks at Electronista, fancy-pants watchmaker TAG Heuer will team up with the French designers at Modelabs to develop a new line of luxury mobile phones. The news follows closely on the heels of other fashion icons like Armani and Prada entering the phone biz, but there is no word yet on how the Tag Heuer phone would compare to those offerings in terms of specifications. As for the design, the mobile phones are expected to be as as “contemporary,” “technological” and “timeless” as their watches. Naturally, there is no word yet on any type of advertising campaign, but my guess is that somehow Tiger Woods will find a way to make even more money whoring it out to the masses. The Tallest Building in the World Looks Like a Stack of Pringles

10:00AM Addy Dugdale | On our blink-and-you’ll-miss-it visit to the world’s largest building site, aka Dubai, we stopped for a gawk at this, the Burj Dubai. Currently the tallest structure in the world, it stands at 156 stories and 585 meters high, but is expected to reach around 800 meters when finished. Designed by Adrian Smith, the tower continues the Armani-Samsung love-in, as the Italian designer is putting his name to a sexy hotel, while the Korean mega-corp is one of the three constructors on the skyscraper. But the cruelest cut of all is that Burj Dubai (burj means “tower” in Arabic) will be dwarfed by Kuwait’s Burj Mubarak Al-Kabir, which will measure 1,001 meters when it is ready. But that’s not expected to be until 2012 so, until then, size queens will be eyeing up Dubai. [Burj Dubai] More »

Samsung Armani Phone Hands On Video

8:30AM Jason Chen | Susi from Shiny Shiny has a hands-on demo of the Samsung Armani phone we showed you earlier. Not to spoil anything, but the phone has part of a UI that’s Cover Flow-esque. Oh, and Susi dies at the end. [Shiny Shiny] More »
