Joaquin Phoenix Nabs A Win For Joker In A Quiet Night For Genre At The Golden Globes

Although there wasn’t much in the way of genre fiction in this year’s nominees in the first place—especially after Game of Thrones, a typical stalwart of the last decade or so of Globes nominations, was left almost entirely absent for its final season. But even then, the night was incredibly quiet, save for a little solace from the clown prince of crime himself.

Although Joker itself didn’t win all of its nominated categories—it lost out in Best Motion Picture (Drama), and in Todd Phillips’ nomination for Best Director—Joaquin Phoenix and Hildur Guðnadóttir picked up wins in both Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Original Score for a Motion Picture, respectively. Whether or not Joker can translate this good night at the Globes into buzz when next week’s Oscar 2020 nominations are out remains to be seen, but it was a good night nonetheless for the R-rated movie that took over the world last year.

Other notable highlights from the evening included a surprise win for Laika’s Missing Link in the Best Motion Picture (Animated) field, besting Disney’s Lion King, Toy Story 4, and Frozen II, and sad news for Cats—as if it didn’t have enough—as Taylor Swift’s new song for the motion picture nightmare, “Beautiful Ghosts,” losing out on a win in Best Original Song (Motion Picture) category. Find a full list of nominees below, with the winners of each category in bold.
