Chris Evans Is Hinting He’s Done Playing Captain America Again

Just as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is gearing up to welcome one new Captain, Chris Evans says that its current one is preparing to lay down his shield for good.

Speaking to the New York Times about his career and his upcoming Broadway debut, Evans reiterated something he’s long hinted at in the years leading up to the crossover mania that is Avengers: Infinity War and its still-untitled follow-up, AKA Avengers 4: These are his last two contracted Marvel films, and once they’re done, so is he. As NYT‘s Reggie Ugwu writes:

Last year, he filmed back-to-back the final two Marvel movies for which he is under contract – “Avengers: Infinity War,” due in April, and a sequel planned for next year. For now, he has no plans to return to the franchise (“You want to get off the train before they push you off,” he said), and expects that planned reshoots in the fall will mark the end of his tenure in the familiar red, white and blue super suit.

Evans has bounced back before from previous discussions about Steve Rogers’ exit from the Marvel movieverse, but there’s a sense of finality in his discussion here that really makes it seem like Avengers 4 will be his last foray as the First Avenger.

There’s more than a few candidates for just who could take on the mantle after him – Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes, a character who’s taken on Cap’s duties more than a few times in the comics, has long professed a desire to see the movie universe go the same way. Sam “The Falcon” Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, also recently took up the mantle for a while in the comics, so he’s an option. But for now, enjoy Chris Evans’ portrayal of Steve Rogers while he’s here – because it doesn’t sound like he’ll be around for much longer.
