Once Upon A Time Is Closing The Storybook For Good

One year after Once Upon a Time left the sleepy town of Storybrooke, it’s also leaving the world of television. Show creator Adam Horowitz has confirmed that ABC America’s Once Upon a Time will be ending after season seven.

Once Upon a Time has had a bit of a tumultuous year. After the end of season six, most of the original cast, including Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas left the show. Given that season six had such a definitive ending, it seemed unlikely the show would continue without its stars.

However, Once Upon a Time chose to take a chance on a soft reboot, set in a Seattle neighbourhood, starring an older Henry Mills (Andrew J. West) and with only a few key members of the original cast remaining. The reboot had some strong elements but was also missing a lot of the original magic, and the move from Sunday to Friday nights in the US affected the audience.

Horowitz and co-creator Edward Kitsis told Entertainment Weekly they went into season seven not knowing whether they would get to continue, so they filmed two endings – one open-ended, one closed – for the final episode of the season (now the series finale). It looks like they know which one they will be using when Once Upon a Time returns in the US March 2 for the second half of season seven. The showrunners wouldn’t reveal where the series is going for its final adventure, but Kitsis did tease that some of the show’s original characters will be returning for the series finale.
