Lord And Miller On Their Han Solo Movie Exit: ‘Sometimes People Break Up’

Disney and the combined directorial duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller are never ever ever getting back together – at least for the Han Solo movie. Now called Solo: A Star Wars Story and helmed by Ron Howard, the project has left the filmmaking pair, who have largely refrained from commenting on being unceremoniously dumped… until now. And just like any ex, Lord and Miller appear to be both supportive and bitter about the loved one who’s since moved on with their lives.

“We’re super well-adjusted, obviously we’re doing great. We’re super drunk right now,” Miller joked after he and Lord were asked about Solo: A Star Wars Story during a panel at Vulture Festival for their MTV series Clone High. While I’m sure nondisclosure agreements, and a general desire not to crap on their ex Disney, limits what they can and can’t talk about (it’s believed that Lord and Miller refused Disney’s request to change their directorial style), it’s clear that Lord and Miller aren’t happy about the way things went down.

“In terms of us leaving the project, I think everybody went in with really good intentions and our approach to making the movie was different than theirs. That was a really big gap to bridge, and it proved to be too big,” Lord said. “Sometimes people break up. And it’s really sad, and it’s really disappointing, but it happens and we learned a lot from our collaborators and we’re better filmmakers for it.”

Miller added that, after the Disney split, the two of them took a “much-needed vacation” (any staple for a scorned lover who needs to get their groove back) and now they’re working on The LEGO Movie sequel and producing that Miles Morales animated Spider-Man film. And of course, staying classy, Lord and Miller had nothing but kind words for the cast and crew of the film, and never wished them or Disney any ill will. However, Clone High writer and collaborator Bill Lawrence isn’t as easily forgiving. Like a true Samantha, Lawrence wasn’t about to give Disney the time of day for screwing over his BFFs.

“I hope that movie shits the bed,” Lawrence said.
