The New X-Men TV Show Will Feature Some Familiar Mutant Heroes

Vin Diesel has high hopes for a solo Groot movie. Sonequa Martin-Green and Scott Gimple discuss whether Star Trek: Discovery could mean a grim fate for Sasha on The Walking Dead. Dan Harmon discusses why Rick and Morty‘s third season isn’t done yet. Plus, new footage from The LEGO Batman movie. To me, my spoilers!

Rampage

Naomie Harris has joined the cast as “a geneticist with a moral streak”. The fact that her mere possession of a moral streak has to be pointed out as a trait seems slightly insulting to geneticists. [THR]

Groot

While the chances of him putting his place forward for the role of Black Bolt in an Inhumans movie might be very slim now, Vin Diesel isn’t done shilling himself for future Marvel projects. This time? He thinks a solo Groot film is all but given:

It’s something that James Gunn has talked about, and something that I know he’d love to do. Sure, I think it could be very interesting. I think it’s inevitable, I think, ya know, that character’s so enigmatic. He was already one of the most unique characters in the Marvel Universe, and I think what Marvel has done, primarily what James Gunn has done to realise that character has exceeded anyone and everyone’s expectations.

Ghost in the Shell

Here’s a new “motion poster” for the film, which is basically a 15-second clip featuring the Major.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Ambushing Alice is a bad idea, as shown in this new clip from the film.

Minions 2/Sing 2/Secret Life of Pets 2

Illumination and Universal have announced a new slate of animated films. The Minions sequel arrives in the US 3 July 2020; Sing 2 is scheduled for the US 25 December 2020; and The Secret Life of Pets 2 has been pushed back a year to the winter of 2019. [Coming Soon]

The LEGO Batman Movie

Dick Grayson asks Bruce Wayne for advice on getting adopted in a new TV spot.

Sadako vs Kayako

Creepy goings on with ashen-bodied kids in a new clip from the Japanese horror movie mash-up.

X-Men TV Show

While being as vague as possible, showrunner Matt Nix says that at least a few members of the X-Men — whether those are new takes on familiar characters, or perhaps even the versions from the films — will appear in his new TV series.

I would actually be killed. They would literally kill me. The only thing that I would say is that it’s a… some of those things are slightly up in the air, but the fact that it’s a question I can’t answer tells you something.

Suffice it to say it’s a show that contains some characters that fans will be excited about. I can’t talk about specifics, but it’s not like there are no X-Men in it.

The Walking Dead/Star Trek: Discovery

Sonequa Martin-Green deftly dodges answering the question of whether her lead role on Discovery means doom for Sasha on The Walking Dead:

Well, I can’t say anything. I can say that the story is as impactful and powerful and dynamic as it always has been, and there’s nothing to worry about where that’s concerned.

TWD Showrunner Scott Gimple, on the other hand, is much more adamant — almost too adamant — that Sasha is sticking around for the foreseeable future, even with Martin-Green’s commitments to Trek:

Sonequa Martin-Green can do anything. I’ve seen her battle a horde of walkers this year while simultaneously battling a stomach flu that would have had most people crying in the dirt. She can fulfil the duties of a Lieutenant Commander on a Constitution-class starship whilst battling walkers, Saviors, and whatever gets in Sasha’s way. We’ve had to juggle before. I will certainly juggle for Star Trek any day of the week. OK, maybe not on Sunday.

Roadside Picnic

WGN America has scrapped its plans for a pilot based on Arkady and Boris Strugatsky’s science fiction novel about a man who hunts for artefacts left behind by aliens living in a “Red Zone”. Sony Pictures TV is currently shopping the pilot to other networks.

Rick & Morty

Dan Harmon offers a simple reason for what’s holding up season three: It’s taking longer to write than he expected.

If [co-creator] Justin [Roiland] were here he’d agree. He and I would go, ‘Yeah, we fucked up,’ and it’s hard to put your finger on how we fucked up. Rick and Morty keeps taking longer and longer to write, and I don’t know why.
