DC Films Have A Consistent Problem: It’s The Superheroes

Video: The guy that told us why Marvel movies look kinda ugly — we also told you how to fix them, sort of — is back with another great YouTube explainer. Patrick Willems’ latest video talks about why DC’s recent superhero films have failed to excite audiences, and it’s not mediocre plots — it’s poorly created characters.

DC, Willems says, presumes that moviegoers will flock to its movies on the strength of the franchises themselves. He calls it “the built-in popularity” of the brands. But DC hasn’t taken into account the fact that potential moviegoers remember and like the original characters, from the comic books and movies that they’ve seen before, and not necessarily the gritty, dark, noir reboots that DC has been fond of in recent years.
