Instead Of Coming Once A Year, A Purge TV Show Will Come Weekly

You know how, in the universe of The Purge movies, all laws are suspended for one day a year as some sort of insane plan to fix the country? Well, a Purge TV show is in the works that will turn this yearly event into a weekly one.

Writer-director James DeMonaco was asked by Cinema Blend about the possibility of doing an anthology show that told several stories during a Purge. He responded:

Dude, it’s so weird you bring that up. Yes! Not an anthology… I guess kind of an anthology — more of an interwoven anthology. They came to me about a TV show, my idea is that you do six or seven storylines. And I would kind of intercut them, use flashbacks.

DeMonaco said that a 10-hour (that is, 10 episode) season would let him delve into the “nuance and complexity that would drive someone to commit a terrible act on this night” which he can’t do in a movie. The idea he has is a “flashback narrative, if you start on Purge Night but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are”.

DeMonaco added that they’re at the place in development where “we’re talking about deals right now, money is being spoken about. Things like that. So I think it’s being taken very seriously from the higher-ups who obviously dictate everything.”

So. The Purge: The Series, coming soon to a TV near you.
