Archer Creator Adam Reed Says The Show Will End After Season 10

Grab yourself a bear claw and a blue cocktail, preferably served in a goldfish bowl. Sure, we had a feeling this was coming — PHRASING — but FX’s animated spy comedy Archer will end after its 10th season. We’ll still be getting three more seasons, but they will only run eight episodes each.

This announcement comes not from FX but from Archer creator Adam Reed, who also voices the character of Ray Gillette. He broke the news on a recent episode of the Murmur podcast:

The plan is to end Archer after season 10. I don’t know that anybody has talked about that, but that is definitely my plan — to do eight, nine and 10 and they’re gonna be each shorter seasons of just eight episodes — and then wind it up. … I was gonna end it after eight, but then I had sort of a brain explosion of a way that I could do three more seasons and really keep my interest up. So the three seasons that are coming up are gonna be pretty different from what has come before, and they’re gonna be different from each other.

As fans of the show know, “pretty different” for Archer could mean literally anything — the most recent season saw the disgraced secret agents moving from New York to LA to become private detectives; the fifth season, Archer: Vice, temporarily turned the gang into coke dealers (plus one outlaw country superstar). Given that season seven’s Hollywood detour ended on a cliffhanger, season eight (due in 2017) will likely pick up there. After that, who knows… though one can only assume it will involve several visits to the danger zone.
