The Old Lois Lane Really Doesn’t Like The New Lois Lane

The woman behind one of the most famous incarnations of Lois Lane is not pleased about the version that’s part of DC’s current cinematic universe. In an interview with HeyUGuys, Margot Kidder bashed the latest portrayal of Lois Lane as sexist and old-fashioned.

“[They] didn’t give her anything to do! I mean, how stupid is that? They made her what used to be the girlfriend, which kind of ended in the 60s with women’s rights,” Kidder said.

Lois Lane is widely regarded as one of the first feminist icons in comic book films. At a time when women were largely reduced to playing the stereotypical damsel in distress, Kidder’s Lois Lane was a smart and confident reporter who gave Christopher Reeve’s Superman a run for his money. Sure she still got rescued, but she did it in style.

While many people praised or “OK’d” Amy Adams’ turn as Lois Lane in Man of Steel, audiences were largely baffled by what happened to her in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. She was reduced to the naked-in-a-bathtub girlfriend who just happened to show up for fight scenes when the plot needed it.

It’s not Amy Adams’ fault; Kidder called her “one of the best American actresses around”. Rather, she said it’s because the writing and directing is worse in Zack Snyder’s films than previous Superman flicks (Superman IV likely excluded), which she blamed on conglomerate studios trying to appeal to large demographics rather than focus on the story.

“[Earlier films] were so much truer to the comic books. Kids learn the morality tale of Jesus in a way; a guy away from his dad, floundering around on Earth and is this purely good person. Superman responds to women by saving them, saves the children and beats up the bad guys, if you will,” Kidder said.

Adams is set to reprise her role as Lois Lane in Justice League, which comes out in the US on 17 November 2017. Let’s hope she doesn’t have to choose between being a lady and a journalist again, because right now she’s kinda sucking at both.
