Dutch Companies Create Tesla Hearse So Your Loved Ones Can Die In Style

Yesterday, Elon Musk warned us that his grand vision to send humans to Mars wouldn’t be without danger — in fact, he said, “The probability of death is quite high on the first mission.” Now, with what can only be described as perfect timing (or great marketing), two Dutch companies are claiming they have created a hearse out of a Tesla Model S.

The two companies are RemetzCar, which makes luxury car limousines, and Van der Lans & Busscher BV, a funeral transport company. They say the hearse really does exist, and will be hanging out this week at the 2016 Funeral Exhibition in the Netherlands.

They also say that it’s the world’s first all-electric funeral car — which, if true, means it will make a sweet, sweet final ride for the Bill Gates wannabe in your life.

Electrek has some theories on how the hearse might have been put together:

From the picture, it looks the wheelbase was significantly stretched and the top half of the Model S was replaced from the B-pillar to create an all-glass rear where the coffin would be stored for travel.

RemetzCar claims to have cut the vehicle in half after having removed the battery pack. Then, they extended the base by 80 cm (31.5 inch) before fitting the battery pack back into the platform.

In a translated announcement on its website, Van der Lands & Busscher BV says the hearse is a “modern funeral carriage for a stylish, environmentally conscious and silent farewell”. Creepy, but sure!

Of course, there’s a chance this is all a bizarre publicity stunt, but Van der Lands & Busscher BV does indeed have a spot at the Funeral Exhibition, and RemetzCar does appear to be a legitimate player in the car-stretching business. I’m not sure which option I’m hoping for more.
