It’s hard to imagine after years of Chris Evans in the role that John Krasinski was at one point incredibly close to becoming Marvel Studio’s Captain America. Krasinski dropped out at pretty much the final hurdle, but according to him, the reason he knew he wouldn’t get it? Chris Hemsworth’s abs.
Speaking on Conan last night, Krasinski recalled his time in the running to become Steve Rogers, telling the audience about him trying on the costume and getting to screen test … and then the exact moment he realised that it wasn’t meant to be:
I was putting on the suit just watching it, and like, this is so amazing. And I got about right to my waist, I was still shirtless and feeling pretty good about myself — wasn’t 13 Hours yet but felt pretty good. All of a sudden Chris Hemsworth walked by as Thor and went, ‘Hey mate’, and I went, ‘I’m good. This is stupid, I shouldn’t — It’s OK, I’m not going to be Captain America, it’s fine.’
Oh dear.
To be fair, there’s not many people on the planet who wouldn’t be intimidated by the thought of their physique being compared with Chris Hemsworth’s. And given Marvel’s penchant for topless scenes with its male actors, maybe Krasinski was right to be concerned, even jokingly! But alas, it was never meant to be, and instead we got this:
Sorry John. You win some, you lose some.
