Huge, Crazy Rumours About The Comic Book Cast Of Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming

A supposed cast list posted to Twitter and then quickly deleted — but not before, given the nature of the internet, being screencapped to hell and disseminated anyway — is packed with a ton of supposed allusions to characters big and small from Peter Parker’s comic book history.

Although the list still denotes Zendaya as “Michelle” rather than her supposed actual role as Mary Jane Watson, it does include the recently rumoured Bokeem Woodbine as Herman Schultz, the Shocker. On top of that?

Well, it also suggests Selenis Leya is playing a gender-bent version of Professor Miles Warren, AKA clone-happy supervillain the Jackal. Tunde Adebimpe’s Mr Cobwell shares a name with the man who inadvertently sent Peter Parker to the Tinkerer’s workshop in the comics, and we know the Tinkerer is in the film. Kenneth Choi appears to playing a descendent of his Captain America: The First Avenger character, Jim Morita, as Principal Morita. Angourie Rice is supposedly playing Betty “Brandt” rather than Betty Brant, Jonah Jameson’s secretary at the Daily Bugle. Even Tiffany Espensen’s character, Cindy, shares a name with Cindy Moon, a classmate of Peter’s who was also bitten by the same radioactive spider he was, becoming the superhero Silk.

Given the list’s dubious origins — and even its formatting for a cast list is a little peculiar — and all these supposed comic book character connections (even the fact that it spells Betty Brant’s name incorrectly), it’s perhaps best to load your web shooters with cartridges of spider-salt for now. Ant-Man and the Wasp

In unsurprising news, a Hollywood Reporter piece on Michael Pena joining a horror film called The Bringing also confirms that the actor will begin filming his return as Luis next year.

Thor: Ragnarok

Chris Hemsworth has posted a new set picture of himself and Tom Hiddleston on set in Brisbane, in some more casual clothing than we’d typically expect from Asgardians. Note the “Has Thor Returned?” headlines on the papers.

They are indeed for scenes in the movie — here’s an extensive video from filming for what looks like scenes set in New York City, including a moment where Loki photobombs a selfie two passers-by take with the God of Thunder.

Here’s some slightly new looks at the cast, heroes and villains, in two new Empire covers. [CBR]

Agents of SHIELD

Jeph Loeb says the show’s move to a later time slot will allow it to delve into “edgier” material:

By going to 10 o’clock, we’re going to be taking on just a little bit more edge, a little bit more grit. The show is pretty violent for something at 9 o’clock, but when we get to 10 o’clock, we’re going to be just a little hair of something that I think people are going to really enjoy.

Luke Cage

Loeb also told CBR about the show’s approach to treating Luke Cage as a contemporary character with connections to the real world, while balancing that with superpowered shenanigans:

You can’t set out to do Luke Cage and not deal with the reality of what’s going on in this country, and what’s going on in general. It’s not what the show’s about, but if we can get our message out, which is, ‘This is all one planet, and we’re going to have figure it out’ — you just can’t put up walls and try to figure it out that way. We made a show which has great fun, great action, all the things that you want out of Luke Cage.

Marvel always works best when it lives in the real world, but then has the Marvel touch around it. There are people with superpowers, there is that little magic icing of humour, the people are aware of how unusual this is. It’s one of the things that’s very different about Marvel — if someone is suddenly bulletproof or able to lift up a car or tear off a car door, there are people there going, ‘How did that happen?” as opposed to, ‘Oh, I guess it’s just yet another person with superpowers.’ By making it real and grounded and feel like it is of our world, then if we happen to be able to get a message in along the way, great — but if you just want to watch the show and enjoy the show, enjoy the show.

A new still featuring Luke and Misty Knight has also been released.

The Flash

Joey King has been cast as Frances “Frankie” Kane, better known as former Teen Titan turned villain Magenta. Kane is a metahuman with the power to control metal, but her powers also cause her to be subsumed by the villainous Magenta persona. [Comicbook.com]

Colony

Tony Plana and Jessica Parker Kennedy have joined the cast. Plana will play Alcala, the new proxy for Los Angeles, described as a man who puts on a noble face for the public he serves but in private he’s “ruthless and willing to do anything to hold onto his power”. Meanwhile, Kennedy will play Maya, a labour worker “willing to take big risks for what she believes in”. [EW]

The Defenders

Charlie Cox told crowds at Wizard World Chicago that Matt Murdock will learn lessons about working with a team in the series that will play into his outlook in season three of Daredevil:

He can’t do all this alone. And that’s to say maybe some teamwork — He’s actually going to relinquish [some responsibility]. So whatever lessons he learns in The Defenders will then play into I think season three.
