Video: China still isn’t sure if it will release Ghostbusters, but the country’s filmgoers won’t be lacking for supernatural insanity if it doesn’t. Witness the trailer for fantasy epic League of Gods, touted as a riff on the X-Men though it’s actually inspired by ancient Chinese mythology. It’s a CGI smorgasbord, and it looks NUTS.
It’s directed by Koan Xu (a VFX artist), and it bears the star power of Jet Li, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Fan Bingbing and Louis Koo, among others. Deadline offers a brief synopsis:
The story is based on Fengshen Bang, an ancient novel that is part of Chinese mythology. Featuring a group of unique superheroes, the film tells the story of how King Zhou of Shang becomes a tyrant under the spell of Daji, a vixen spirit who is disguised as one of his concubines.
But really, based on the preview, League of Gods — which will open on over 15,000 screens in China at the end of July — will trade less in story than in visual impact. Swords will clash! Monsters will battle! Heroes will rise! A magical baby (?) will be born?
