We’ll be seeing more from the LEGO Batman Movie at Comic-Con this week, but we’ve now got our first look at characters in the film beyond Will Arnett’s goofy Dark Knight — and they’re looking a little different from their usual incarnations.
USA Today has revealed some new stills and information about the movie, giving us our first looks at the Joker, played by Zach Galifianakis, and Robin, played by Michael Cera. The Joker still looks pretty Joker-y, although the crazy hair and razor-sharp teeth is a little different to the usual LEGO Joker we see in the toy sets. In the movie, the Joker goes on a massive crime spree in Gotham — accompanied by Harley Quinn, who you can get a glimpse of below — pretty much because Batman makes the mistake of telling him that he’s not the Dark Knight’s greatest villain. Bad move, Bats.
Speaking of bad moves, one made by Bruce Wayne is how Robin — confirmed as the Dick Grayson version of the character — gets roped into the movie. This much, much younger version of the boy wonder only being part of Batman’s life because, as Wayne, he accidentally adopts him at a charity auction.
Not wanting to be bogged down with a kid either as Wayne or Batman, he eventually has to relent when Dick gets his hands on a “Reggae Man” costume, which he adopts into the classic Robin costume to fight crime alongside his adoptive dad.
It’s the exact sort of silliness you’d expect from a spiritual follow-up to The LEGO Movie, isn’t it? We’ll see more from The LEGO Batman Movie this week at Comic-Con, ahead of its release on 30 March 2017.
