We Might Finally Know The Identity Of Mads Mikkelsen’s Doctor Strange Villain

We’ve seen Mads Mikkelsen’s Doctor Strange villain in action already — both in the teaser trailer and through set pictures — but we still don’t know who he’s actually playing. Thanks to some new merchandise, however, we might have finally found out.

The details come from information released alongside a series of Diamond Select Minimates figures for the film. While the copy doesn’t give us hints about what happens in the film, it does give us names — confirming that Mikkelsen’s character is called Kaecilius, and that Rachel McAdams is indeed playing Christine Palmer, one of the several characters to take up the Night Nurse alter-ego:

A Diamond Select Toys Release! The next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now the next entry in the long-running Marvel Minimates line! Series 70 of Marvel Minimates mini-figures travels to the world of the Doctor Strange movie, with four different two-packs: Dr. Strange with The Ancient One, Mordo with Kaecilius, the specialty-exclusive Stephen Strange with Christine Palmer and the specialty-exclusive Wong & Zealot!

So who is Kaecilius? In the comics, he’s a minor character who was actually an apprentice of Baron Mordo, acting as a messenger and agent for the sinister magic user.

It might just be a borrowed name, but if Mikkelsen’s character is like his comic book counterpart, it might indicate that Mordo — played by Chiwetel Ejiofor in the movie, and seemingly still on the side of Stephen Strange for much of it — will go bad at some point, whether it’s during the events of the first movie or a potential Doctor Strange 2: Agamotto Boogaloo.

Now now, let’s remember that tie-in merchandise is hardly the most reputable source for movie spoilers, but it’s the name that’s important here, rather than the reveal of a scenario from the film, so it’s slightly more trustworthy.

On top of that, this isn’t actually the first time Kaecilius’ name has popped up linked to Doctor Strange. Back in November last year, rumours were floating around about the film’s opening, mentioning a sequence with Kaecilius as the leader of a group of cultists opening a portal in 1960s Kathmandu. So this just seems to be further confirmation that Mikkelsen is indeed playing the character.
