Video: Vinyl nerds love limited editions, and one of the rarest subsets of gimmick records are the liquid-filled variety. You read that right — liquid-filled vinyl. The concept isn’t all that new, and was first (abortively) attempted by Disney in the ’70s, but it’s only become popular and viable in more recent years.
In this lengthy video, Gozer’s Den gives an overview of some of the strangest stunt releases, of the liquid and non-liquid variety. Some of the highlights include a Rush 2112 reissue that creates a hologram while it plays, and a deeply puerile 7″ from punk band Drunk & Horny which includes poop-and-fart-scented scratch-and-sniffs.
One of the rarest is probably the Flaming Lips’ Heddy Fwends blood vinyl, which was limited to 10 copies which originally sold for $US2500 ($3352) each. The interior of each record contains actual blood from the artists who worked on it (Erykah Badu, Ke$ha and Chris Martin among them). That’s absolutely disgusting! But also really cool — literally. Y’know, because you have to keep it refrigerated. Because of the blood. Let’s just stew on that for while and then never speak of it again.
