Amazing Fan Film Uses Camera Drones To Capture An Intense Star Wars Dogfight

Video: Camera-mounted drones can be used for all sorts of wonderful videos. But I’m pretty sure the most wonderful use is to create own X-Wing vs TIE Fighter dogfight videos — because man, this is one brilliant idea.

The fine folks at Corridor Digital shot a bunch of footage using a set of drones mounted with various cameras, doing twists and turns as they flew across the sky — and even chased each other at times. Through the magic of digital effects, they then transposed 3D-printed X-Wing and TIE Fighter cockpits (and in the case of the X-Wing, a back half featuring an R2-D2 action figure for reaction shots!) over that footage. The result? One brilliant-looking spacefighter chase scene.

It’s really, really well done — even the crash footage from the crew’s filming is put to excellent use, to portray TIE Fighters being blasted out of the sky. Bookended by some cute little stop-motion segments using Star Wars action figures, it’s a great short film. Check out the behind-the-scenes video on making it all work below.
