The Netflix ‘Recommended TV’ Program Goes Global

Almost a year ago Netflix introduced its Recommended TV program in the US, and today it has extended to wherever Netflix is available — with tougher criteria.. We have the details on the first models to receive the thumbs up from Netflix in 2016.

“The evaluation program was created because our members told us they wanted smart TVs to be easier to use, provide simpler access to the things they do most, and perform better overall,” Netflix said in a statement this morning. “The goal of the Netflix Recommended TV logo is to help people easily identify which devices meet those needs and deliver a superior smart TV experience.”

The new criteria set for the recommendations include “faster performance thresholds for existing criteria”.

None of last year’s TV models would have met the new 2016 criteria, says Netflix.

The first TV manufacturers to make the cut for 2016 models are LG (for UHD TVs with webOS 3.0) and Sony (for Android 4K UHD TVs).

The exact recommended models for LG are the UH6300 series, UH6500 series, UH7500 series, UH8500 series, UH9500 series and G6 series.

For Sony it’s the S85D series, X85D series, X93D series, X94D series, XD93 series, XD94 series, SD85 series and XD85 series that made the cut.

When speaking about why these particular models received the recommendation, Netflix says “among other benefits, these TVs both have Instant On so that the TV wakes quickly, and Internet TV services and smart menu features are ready to use right away.”

“They also have TV Resume, which means when Netflix was the last used app, the TV comes right back to Netflix when turned back on again — just like smartphones and tablets do today. Overall, these devices deliver faster performance and easier access to the most popular services.”

Both the LG and Sony TVs will be sold in all countries where Netflix is available, though specific model availability varies by region.

Netflix will be adding more TVs to the program throughout the year, with updates available on the Netflix Recommended TV page.
