The Fan Theory That Fixes One Of The Most Annoying Plotholes In The Lord Of The Rings

Video: It's a question every Lord of the Rings fan asks him or herself eventually: If giant eagles could give Frodo a ride home after he dropped the One Ring into the fires of Mt. Doom, why couldn't they have given him a ride there and saved everybody a lot of trouble?

The theory, which we first encountered here, states that hitching a ride with the eagles was Gandalf's plan all along! It certainly seems more reasonable than making a Hobbit hike all the way to Mordor.

Interesting...but as the eye of sauron is a deathray...they are not flying the eagles into mordor.

I've never understood the question/complaint. If they rode to Mordor on the Eagles, they'd have been shot out of the air immediately. In middle of the air there's nowhere to hide from the Eye. The Eagles were able to get there only after Sauron was destroyed along with the Ring.

I dimly recall Gandalf asking the eagles for a favour. He didn't want to ask them twice, their help was under sufferance, they had already rescued him from Saruman and regarded him as an overbearing pain in the arse.

      Let me be "that person".
It's touched on in the books. The Eagles have their own business to attend to and don't exist to serve others.

Imagine that flight stretched out over 9-11 hours, 3 movies, 4 directors cut special editions and a "The Art of The LOTR Trilogy" hardcover book...

Might make sense except I don't buy the bit about why he kept the plan secret. Everyone in the fellowship knew they had the ring of power and where they were taking it, which surely is far more important information to keep quiet than whether they are going to go with the Eagles or not.
