World’s Biggest Wind Farm To Be Built Off The Coast Of The UK

The US may make big turbines, but the UK knows how to make lots of them: The world’s biggest wind farm is to be constructed just off the cost of England.

Offshore wind company Dong Energy has announced that it’s to build the huge farm off the coast of Yorkshire in northern England. It will cover 407 square kilometres, be home to 174 wind turbines (each one 190m tall), and eventually generate 1.2 gigawatts of power — enough to provide electricity for a million homes.

The UK government has committed over $US200 million to the project, which will require 2000 people to work on design and construction in the coming years. Dong hopes the turbines will be up and running by 2020.

It’s an ambitious plan. But we need ambitious plans if we’re to achieve what world leaders agreed at last December’s climate talks in Paris.
