Watch This Absurd 10-Minute Video on How to Land a Plane In an Emergency

Tim Morgan, a commercial pilot with years of experience, has created a ten minute video he claims will help anyone safely land a 737 in an emergency. The notion that someone could plop down in a cockpit, with zero experience, and pilot a 737 to a safe landing is ludicrous, but that doesn't make this video any less fascinating.

Morgan created the video to accompany his lengthy Quora response to the question: "What should I do if the pilot passes out and I (with no flight training) have to land the plane?" The article provides a wealth of information about piloting a jet and if you've ever been genuinely curious about what the countless knobs, dials, buttons and gauges in a cockpit do, it's certainly worth a read.

But should you find yourself on a flight where both pilots have lost consciousness, it's doubtful you'll be reaching for your phone in order to save the day. You'd need to be in an actual Boeing 737 cockpit for the instructions to make any sense, and the odds of downloading a ten minute video on crappy airline Wi-Fi before the inevitable happens are slim to none.

I did a flight sim experience and was spoken through this exact sequence, including difficult landings where the approach was not straight like Kai Tak (spelling) checker board approach.

Because the planes are all fly by wire all the controls were remarkably easy and intuitive to use. As long as to have that voice to talk you through it, its not hard, just a matter of knowing what to do and when to do it.

Even if you fluff the landing the TOGA button is all you need to hit to reconfigure the plane for a go around.

The only step that's really essential is working the radio to communicate with ATC. All cabin crew would know how to do this as part of their emergency drills. Thereafter ATC would provide instructions on navigation and landing procedures.

It's also inconceivable they would ask a complete novice to perform a hand-flown landing. The chances of success are extremely low.

It would be far easier (and safer!) to just use the 737-800's autoland capability.

The FAA found 100% of licensed civilian pilots they put cold into their 737 simulator and radioed instructions to land crashed. It's just a new level of complexity. Also explains why after commercial pilots qualify for a different plane, they're disqualified from flying the previous plane unless they train for it again.

100% seems a bit high. Do you have a link to that information? I wouldn't mind reading it.

Got it, sorted. Just need to bring my tablet and I am good to go. Thanks Youtube!!!!!! Was stressing over this for too long.
