Sydney Is Playing Host To A Horror-Themed Campout This Autumn

Part music festival, part movie night and part live-action horror experience, Sydney’s Horror Movie Campout is inviting Australians to spend a night in the woods with them, a couple of clowns, a demon or two and a handful of axe-wielding maniacs.

This event isn’t the first of its kind — a couple have been held before in Adelaide and Melbourne, and and now it’s Sydney’s turn on March 12. Well, Sydney-ish if you’re going to get technical. There aren’t many large, wooded areas in Sydney city where no one can hear you scream, so they’ll be moving an hour north to Mt Penang Gardens on NSW’s Central Coast.

You’ll need to bring your own tent, bedding and seating for the event, but HMC is providing all the entertainment. Scare actors roam the grounds to keep campers on their toes, or you can put everything you’ve learned from horror movies to the test to try and survive the ‘Death Chamber’ scare maze.

The event will feature live music from bands The Lazys, Ivy, The Moving Stills and DJ sets from The Rawhide Kid, though the event really starts at sundown when the main cinema screen will fire up. Beginning with a couple of horror shorts, two classic horror movies will be screened to campers in the perfect atmosphere for horror film consumption. Movies are still being voted on (you can see the shortlist at the voting page here) but let’s be honest, if they don’t play Blair Witch Project then they’re doing something wrong.

To see what campers will be in for, check out this video from one of HMC’s previous events:

Tickets are available now, with first release tickets priced at $75 plus a $5 fee and second release tickets going up to $85, plus $5 fee. There’s also an optional upgrade to a ‘glamping’ package for $120, which gets you access to a tent for up to three campers and a reserved seating area for the movie screening.

Oh, and make sure to bring your best in horror-themed costumes — for once, clowns are welcome!
