Sony’s Smartband 2 ‘Lifelogger’ Is Now Available In Australia

Sony has today announced what it describes as more than a fitness tracker, the Smartband 2 is a “lifelogger”.

The device provides “full-scale insights about your fitness, well-being and stress levels,” according to Sony — and it is available as of today. here is an overview of what it can do:

“We set out to create the most advanced wearable at this section of the market — Smartband 2 has the capability to deliver, and make biometric data meaningful for users within Lifelog,” said John Featherstone, Head of Business Development for APAC and Market Head for Oceania.

“Not only does it represent a powerful vision of how consumers can learn more about themselves — it allows us to explore exciting new opportunities with development partners.”

Overall fitness, excitement and stress levels are monitored throughout the day with a accelerometer and heart rate sensors working together, keeping track of your pulse and heart rate variability. Activities such as walking and running are automatically tracked with your heart rate being simultaneously mapped.

Smartband 2 works in conjunction with Sony’s Lifelog app which tracks progress, provides comparative insights, and gives you “inspiring motivational prompts” relevant to your activity of choice.

Smartband 2 provides sleep insights, with automatic sleep detection and a smart alarm clock function vibrates to wake you at the best time based on your sleep cycle.

The Smartband 2 also offers vibration and LED alerts for phone calls, text messages, emails, social media notifications — and even if you move more than 10 metres away from your smartphone (provided it is a Sony Xperia, and you have the devices connected).

It allows you to control the music on your smartphone or tablet, with taps to play, pause and skip through tracks.

It takes around one hour to fully charge the Smartband 2, and a full charge can last up to two days. That’s significantly less than most basic fitness bands on the market.

SmartBand 2 will be available in Black and White at launch, has a silicone casing, metal clip and IP68 waterproofing. The new Smartband is compatible with the previous model’s bands.

SmartBand 2 is available now from JB Hi-Fi for a recommended retail price of $199.
