Samsung Will Unveil The Galaxy S7 On February 21

The teaser for Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked 2016 event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona has been released. In exactly three weeks, we’ll get our first glimpse at Samsung’s flagship Android smartphone for 2016 — and the smart money says it’s the Galaxy S7 (and its S7 edge curved-display variant). “Get ready to rethink what a phone can do”, we’re told.

At 7PM Central European Time in Barcelona — that is, 5AM February 22 in Australia, because time zones — Samsung will announce The Next Galaxy. Months of leaks suggest we’ll see a Galaxy S7 that doesn’t look substantially different from the previous version, but with a host of hugely significant changes under the hood.

We’re hearing about fast charging over USB Type-C, as well as an Apple-3D-Touch-esque pressure-sensitive screen, as well as a microSD card slot on the non-Edge variant. While there’s potential for Samsung to stick with a new version of its in-house Exynos octa-core processor, the S7 may launch in some markets with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 820.

The buzz is that only the S7 edge will have different screen sizes offered — likely to stop cannibalising the sales of the top-of-the-line Galaxy Note 5 and its successor. Dust and water resistance like previous Samsung Galaxy S* Active phones, and Sony’s own Xperia Z line, is another potential addition to the line-up. Of course, integrated support for Samsung Pay, launching in Australia this year, is an obvious inclusion.

One final treat: these are alleged press renders of the Galaxy S7, leaked to Twitter by prolific gadget-surprise-ruiner Evan Blass.
