Mark Zuckerberg Just Gave A Huge Boost To Samsung’s Gear VR

Samsung and Facebook are teaming up on virtual reality more than ever, and Facebook head honcho Mark Zuckerberg just gave the world’s biggest gadget company a huge PR boost by stepping up on stage at Samsung’s Galaxy S7 launch and talking up the quality of Samsung’s virtual reality headset and smartphones.

In his speech, Zuckerberg specifically pointed out Samsung’s experience in developing the low-persistance OLED screens used in its Galaxy smartphones as overcoming one of the biggest hurdles in making virtual reality real.

Zuckerberg also spoke about the potential of user-created virtual reality content, which Facebook has a platform for hosting and Samsung has a device for capturing in the new Gear 360 camera. “When my baby daughter takes her first steps, I hope that we can take a 360 video. VR is going to be the most social platform. And Gear VR is by far the most social experience — the best hardware, from Samsung, with the best social network integration with Facebook.”

Facebook is making some innovations in VR streaming, like dynamically delivering only the frames the user is looking at — saving around four times the bandwidth compared to YouTube’s current method. It can only benefit from more VR content being created and shared on its worldwide social media platform. But this quick talk by Zuckerberg seems to be ticking a lot of boxes for Samsung, too.
