Emily Blunt May Become This Generation’s Mary Poppins

Emily Blunt May Become This Generation’s Mary Poppins

For the past several years the Walt Disney Company has been madly attempting to remake all the classic animated films into live action. One of the latest to move forward is Mary Poppins, the 1964 masterpiece that blended live action and animation. And now they may have the perfect lead actress: Emily Blunt.

Variety reports that Blunt, who showed her singing chops in another recent Disney film, Into the Woods, is in preliminary talks for the role. She’s been the number one choice since the project went into development last year — but Blunt’s schedule and personal life may not allow her to do it.

Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Chicago) is directing the film which sounds like it’s going to be something of a reimagining/sequel. Where the original film takes place in 1910, this version will take place 20 years later in Depression-era London. According to Variety’s insiders, the film “will take story lines from P.L. Travers’ children[‘s] books focusing on Poppins’ continued adventures with the Banks family”. So it sounds like this film will be a kind of sequel for fans of the original, but also a jumping-on point for new fans.

If Disney is going to make a new, live-action version of Mary Poppins, there are few actresses who would be better to play the role than Blunt.
