Do you have $212,000 burning a hole in your pocket? Have you always dreamed of throwing a Boogie Nights-themed party in a penthouse with a view of the Chicago skyline? Then you're going to love this real estate listing. The three-bedroom apartment near Evanston, Illinois was built in 1972 and decorated with the hippest orange and green furniture of the time. Apparently, however, the penthouse never got used and now serves as a time capsule of sorts from a simpler time.

With 174 square metres of living space and two bathrooms, there's plenty of room for you and your nostalgic friends to talk about the war in Vietnam and President Richard Nixon and Pulsar's amazing LCD watches and stuff.

By Zillow's estimate, the list price boils down to a mortgage payment of less than $850. There's also a balcony that overlooks a heated outdoor pool. The bathrooms even come stocked with vintage perfume that's presumably been sitting there for 40 years. How could you pass up an opportunity like this?

My rent in Australia for a room in a 2 bedroom aparment is $330! Who do I have to talk to talk buy this?

Me, I'll send you the paperwork to sign after you transfer a 50% deposit ($75,000 US) to 'Allabi Guptaakbar bsb455199, acc1827436'. Please hurry as many buyers, i can only hold for 12hrs.

but look at the HOA fees (US equivalent of strata title management fees)
~$1000 AUD a month and for major unscheduled work like repairing a lift or storm damaged roof the HOA may slog apartment owners several thousand dollars each to cover the cost.
that's like 5 times my Perth apartment's strata fees and our insurance has a very reasonable excess (last storm damage repair left us without any additional strata bills)

Cheap to get in, expensive to stay

Instant 70's movie set for 200k... or a themed AirBNB apartment.

Sadly not to be an airBnB rental - clicking through the links you find the building's HOA (Home Owner Association equivalent to strata title management) has strict no rental rules. And Chicago's vacation rental rules are strict (you need a permit even to holiday rent your own freestanding home let alone a strata title property) and rather strongly enforced.

which is a shame as I'd seriously be airBnB'n that funky abode for my next US trip
