The Well Responsible for LA's Colossal Gas Leak Didn't Have a Safety Valve

Engineers don't know exactly what cased the gigantic natural gas leak outside LA that's the atmospheric equivalent of the BP oil spill. But they suspected it might be ageing infrastructure since the pipes are over 50 years old. Turns out that the well hasn't had a working safety valve since 1979.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, attorney Brian Panish, who is representing local homeowners who are bringing a suit against the Southern California Gas Company, says the Aliso Canyon Underground Storage Facility lacked a deep subsurface valve which could have stopped the gas from leaking:

"Had we had [the safety valve], this whole problem would have been prevented," Panish said. "There would have been a small runoff of some gas and it would have been over. All these people wouldn't have had to leave and they wouldn't be sick. It's critical to the whole case."

In fact, SoCalGas executive Rodger Schwecke confirmed to the LA Weekly that the well did not replace the valve when it was removed in 1979 — but that such a valve was not required by law because it was not a "critical well", meaning that it's less than 100 from a road or 91m from residences. Yet people who live about 1.6km away from the leak are being evacuated, mostly due to the negative physiological response to mercaptans, trace quantities of sulfurous chemicals that engineers add to the odourless methane gas to help detect leaks. And because they probably don't want to live that close to one of the biggest environmental disasters on the planet.

This news bolsters many existing concerns about the maintenance of natural gas facilities throughout the region. The leaking well was a former oil well converted into a gas well when oil extraction ended in 1973. This procedure which had been seen as routine but will likely prompt new regulations on how exactly natural gas can be stored and transported. Meanwhile, the leaking well might be plugged by March.

    Better regulation is clearly needed.

      But regulation strangles business and destroys free market capitalism!

    Mercaptans are not just an aesthetic problem for the affected community. If you were to look a little deeper at Methyl Mercaptans, or more specifically Ethyl Methyl Mercaptan, which is the identifying odiferant commonly used in the LNG / LPG industry, you would find that they are quite the nasty thing. Chronic, rather than acute, but still nasty.
