Last week fans noticed that the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Monopoly set didn’t include the movie’s main character, Rey. Hasbro has finally realised that no, adding a female token into a game like Star Wars Monopoly won’t make less people buy it and yes, some people might even want to play as the film’s main character.
What do you think of our mock image?
The Monopoly debacle was only one note in a wider trend that saw Rey being systematically excluded from most of The Force Awakens merch on the shelves, but it was made especially ridiculous by the fact that the game included young Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader instead — two characters who are barely, if at all relevant to the new movie.
Yesterday, Hasbro Gaming posted an update on their Facebook page stating that Rey would be coming to Star Wars Monopoly “later this year”, though a date has not been specified.
Some fans still aren’t happy. Many are asking if they will be able to exchange their ‘faulty’ (read: Rey-less) Monopoly sets for the corrected one when it comes out, or if Hasbro plans to send out singular Reys to disaffected fans who received the set for Christmas.
Although it would have been nice to see Rey in the set from the start, the fact that so many people made their voices heard and got Hasbro to finally do something about this issue is a step in the right direction. Seriously though, Hasbro, what kind of Monopoly set only has four tokens anyway? A standard set has eight, so why not bring in Poe, Phasma, Maz and BB8 while you’re at it?
