Coming Soon: Kubo And The Two Strings, Lo And Behold

Welcome to the trailer park! This week: more beautiful stop motion from animation studio Laika, and a look at another side of Herzog’s internet documentary.

Kubo And The Two Strings

A new, gorgeous stop motion film from the creators of Coraline and Paranorman.

Synopsis:
“In the epic fantasy, scruffy, kindhearted Kubo ekes out a humble living while devotedly caring for his mother in their sleepy shoreside village. It is a quiet existence – until a spirit from the past catches up with him to enforce an age-old vendetta. Suddenly on the run from gods and monsters, Kubo’s chance for survival rests on finding the magical suit of armor once worn by his fallen father, the greatest samurai the world has ever known. Summoning courage, Kubo embarks on a thrilling odyssey as he faces his family’s history, navigates the elements, and bravely fights for the earth and the stars.”

Lo And Behold: Reveries Of The Connected World

Werner Herzog looks into the idea of AI and the internet. How close are we?

Synopsis:
“Society depends on the Internet for nearly everything but rarely do we step back and recognize its endless intricacies and unsettling omnipotence. From the brilliant mind of Werner Herzog comes his newest vehicle for exploration, a playful yet chilling examination of our rapidly interconnecting online lives. Herzog documents a treasure trove of interviews of strange and beguiling individuals—ranging from Internet pioneers to victims of wireless radiation, whose anecdotes and reflections weave together a complex portrait of our brave new world. Herzog describes the Internet as ‘one of the biggest revolutions we as humans are experiencing,’ and yet he tempers this enthusiasm with horror stories from victims of online harassment and Internet addiction.”

The Angry Birds Movie

I don’t know why this movie is a thing, but it’s coming whether you like it or not.

Synopsis:
“Find out why the birds are so angry. When an island populated by happy, flightless birds is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to three unlikely outcasts – Red, Chuck and Bomb – to figure out what the pigs are up to.”

Keanu

Keanu is a kitten. I won’t complain.

Synopsis:
“Starring Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key — the Comedy Central sketch sensations behind the recently ended Key & Peele — the film follows two ‘blerds’ (read: black nerds) who impersonate gangstas and infiltrate a drug cartel to rescue a stolen cat (named Keanu). ‘This entire movie was basically the most expensive adorable-kitten video of all time,’ jokes Peele, who wrote Keanu with Key & Peele alum Alex Rubens.”

Southbound

Southbound has released its first creepy seven minutes.

Synopsis:
“On a desolate stretch of desert highway, weary travelers—two men on therun from their past, a band on their way to the next gig, a man struggling to get home, a brother in search of his long-lost sister and a family on vacation—are forced to confront their worst fears and darkest secrets in these interwoven tales of terror and remorse on the open road.”

The Survivalist

We know you’re prepping. You’re going to want to watch this to get some ideas.

Synopsis:
“In a time of starvation, a survivalist lives off a small plot of land hidden deep in forest. When two women seeking food and shelter discover his farm, he finds his existence threatened. ”

The Call Up

The whole ‘stuck inside a deadly game’ idea has been explored before, but The Call Up looks to be doing it with some success.

Synopsis:
“A group of online gamers are invited to try a state-of-the-art virtual reality video game but things take a turn for the sinister when these masters of the shoot ’em up discover they will literally be fighting for their lives.”
