With this year’s NRL Grand Final, Telstra’s taking the opportunity to once again showcase LTE-Broadcast — or LTE-B, if you want to use fewer letters. If you happen to be invited inside the company’s “Connected Lounge” at ANZ Stadium, you’ll have a chance to check it out.
Obviously, the tricky part is the invitation. I’m going to hazard a guess that if you’re an eager NRL fan attending the GF today and Telstra hasn’t been in touch yet well, no telecommunications-flavoured soup for you.
On the other hand, all those who do indulge (and are almost certainly not reading this) will have access to various phones with LTE-B support, onto which Telstra will beam “three streams of dedicated content from Channel 9”, according to Channa Seneviratne, the company’s director of wireless network engineering
What’s LTE-B anyway? It’s a service designed to reduce network congestion by providing the same content to multiple users through single source.
It’s not generally available to Australian users yet, but Telstra plans to deploy it for the 2016 football season, with sports stadiums hosting its maiden appearances.
