Microsoft’s been upping its app game for a while now, and the one that’s received the most attention is Outlook. Earlier this year, Microsoft redesigned Outlook to look just like Acompli, an email client it bought months earlier. Now Sunrise, a super-great calendar app recently acquired by Microsoft, will also be sacrificed for the Outlook greater good.
Microsoft is planning to bring Sunrise’s best features to Outlook, and it starts today with a few software tweaks for Outlook on iOS for easier navigation. The update for Android is coming later.
But the part where you’re going to want to pay the most attention to is what Javier Soltero, the VP for the Outlook team, says about both apps’ future. If you love Outlook, get ready to be happy. If you happen to use Sunrise, brace for disappointment:
“All of this means Outlook will eventually replace the current Sunrise app. We will leave Sunrise in market until its features are fully integrated into Outlook, the exact timing of which we will communicate in advance.”
Yep. If you love Sunrise and hope to keep using it, you’re going to have to forcibly adopt Outlook as your go-to email client. That’s not to say that’s necessarily a bad thing. We’ve even dubbed Outlook as one of the best apps for Gmail on iPhone, but choice is always nice, too. If you’re particularly wedded to a certain email client, whether for work or otherwise, this could become reeeeaaallll annoying.
But Soltero does say that Sunrise will be hanging around for a while — until Outlook consumes all its features, that is. So if you can’t seem to divorce yourself from Sunrise, it might be wise to start poking around Outlook because death is approaching.
