Google Just Bought Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com

Google is now part of Alphabet, a parent company created to house all of the web giant’s diverse efforts. But unfortunately for Google, they couldn’t buy Alphabet.com, which was already taken. So they have done the next best thing. They bought the entire alphabet: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com.

Strangely enough, Alphabet.com is owned by BMW who, as the Financial Times notes, uses the domain for its fleet management division. BMW refused to sell the domain to Alphabet, but there’s no word on how much money was offered.

So far, Alphabet hasn’t even created a landing page for abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com and will use ABC.XYZ as its main page.

“We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity’s most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search!” Larry Page said back in August when the company name change was announced. “We also like that it means alpha-bet (Alpha is investment return above benchmark), which we strive for!”

Alphabet/Google reportedly owns over 18,000 different domain names, which isn’t so strange when you consider their various businesses and potential businesses in the works. But abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com certainly stands out as one of the weirdest.
