With A Drone Inside, R2-D2 Can Finally Fly Like A Bird

Master drone builder Otto Dieffenbach is back with what is probably his most amazing flying creation to date. Unlike the flying R2-D2 we saw in the Star Wars prequels, this version of Artoo is able to take to the skies without a pair of pop-out rocket boosters — just a quadcopter cleverly hidden inside.

Otto designed and built his new flying R2-D2 to coincide with the San Diego Comic-Con that got underway last night, and his latest creation looks just perfect. The only thing that distinguishes it from other full-size R2-D2 props is the open dome which allows air to flow past the inner quadcopter’s blades.

Once the droid takes to the air, you’re too impressed to see it actually flying to care about those tiny details. So when is this guy going to start selling his awesome creations to the rest of us? [YouTube via Laughing Squid]
