Google Is Now Testing Its Autonomous Cars In Austin, Texas

Until now, Google has largely tested its cars on real roads around around Mountain View. But its autonomous Lexus SUVs are now also cruising the roads of Austin, Texas.

After gaining permission from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Department of Transportation and local police, Google’s announced that one of its self-driving vehicles is now traversing “a few square miles north and northeast of downtown Austin.” The cars still carry a safety drivers, an important feature as the cars get used to driving around in new surroundings, and Google points out that it’s already taking on “Austin’s pedicabs, pickup trucks, and everything in between.”
