NBN Co Testing 50Mbps Download Speeds Over Its Fixed Wireless Network

NBN Co is all about experimentation these days. It’s figuring out what might work when it comes to Fibre-To-The-Building/Basement; testing a supercharged Hybrid-Fibre Coaxial network, and now it’s experimenting with speed boosts on the Fixed Wireless network in a new pilot.

NBN Co announced today that it would be upping wholesale download speeds to between 25Mbps and 50Mbps during the pilot, which is designed to speed up connectivity in the bush. Upload speeds will also increase to between 5Mbps and 20Mbps. That’s a doubling of the theoretical maximum download speeds and a quadrupling of the theoretical maximum upload speed.

The new speed tiers are being tested ahead of their commercial launch at the end of the year.

There’s no word on who will get the speed boost just yet, with NBN Co still finalising the “exact number of premises as well as the exact areas covered”.
