Watch Twitter Go Nuts For The Liberal Spill

Video: Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably aware that a leadership challenge to the Prime Minister was expected this morning. A motion to “spill” the leadership positions was defeated, and as this video shows, Twitter went nuts as it happened.

Twitter Australia says that there were up to 900 tweets per minute at the height of the #libspill when Chief Whip Philip Ruddock was addressing the media. The above video from TweeVee TV shows the ramp up to that number.

It was expected that Communications Minster Malcolm Turnbull would challenge Tony Abbott for the leadership of the Liberal Party (and subsequently the Prime Ministership), but following a defeat of the spill motion, that challenge never eventuated. We’ll be watching Canberra closely today for Turnbull’s reaction to the defeat.
