A Single Cable With Swappable Connectors Wants To Replace All Your Wires

Travelling for work usually involves bringing along a small mountain of electronics, each with cables that need to tag along too. But a new Kickstarter promises to replace them all — power, video and audio — with a single multi-headed cord that can handle any connection that wireless hasn't already replaced.

Universal cables with swappable connectors aren't a new idea — there are countless smartphone chargers that can easily be converted from Lightning to microUSB to Apple's old dock connector by simply swapping in a new head. But what sets the TOB apart is that it claims to transfer data, audio, video and power.

Inside the nylon-wrapped cable are a combination of heavy gauge copper wires surrounding an optical fibre core. How exactly those are laid out is presumably the secret sauce to what makes the TOB capable of handling different tasks. And to make the cable easy to use, the TOB's creators claim its round design allows for the connectors to be attached in any orientation — they don't need to be perfectly lined up to work. So how the TOB can be used as an HDMI cable — which has 19 pins that need to be perfectly aligned — is a bit of a mystery.

The TOB cable has already reached its $US20,000 funding goal on Kickstarter, and despite claiming far more functionality than other supposed 'premium' cables, you can pre-order a five-foot version for $US65 with delivery as early as July. And that includes Lightning, microUSB, miniUSB, regular USB, audio, HDMI micro and standard HDMI connectors.

Just keep in mind there's a lot of advanced functionality being promised here, including a quick-release feature similar to Apple's MagSafe power connectors. So you might want to hold off on donating until we see more than just a promotional video touting all its theoretically wonderful capabilities. But if it does work as promised, the thought of only having to carry a single cable when you leave the house, no matter how many gadgets are in your bag, sounds pretty fantastic. This looks like it would be pretty useful in an IT shop, for frequent travellers, and people who like clean desks.

Outside of those use cases it looks a little too prone to failure for your average joe.

But still it gets a thumbs up from me.

I had a Belkin and a Targus branded cable that did the same thing about 5 - 7 years ago but was limited to USB, Firewire and various other connectors, nothing really relevant today.

If they keep the cable as a standard and sell individual connector ends as new cable types are introduced (Next USB specs etc), this would be handy.

what a lot of connectors and a big thick chunky cable to carry around. USB C to the rescue (unless you are an apple fanboy)
