A Kid-Sized Wi-Fi Smart Bed Lets Parents Know When They’re Not Asleep

At last year’s CES, bed technology took a quantum leap forward with the Sleep Number IQ that guaranteed a good night’s sleep by tracking your sleep patterns and automatically adjusting the bed to make it more comfortable when you tossed and turned. This year the company will be releasing a smaller version that guarantees kids a peaceful slumber too, while providing parents with remote alerts when a child isn’t dozing.

There are countless other sleep tracking solutions already on the market, but the SleepIQ Kids Bed uses pressure sensors built right into the adjustable mattress to track movement, breathing, and even a child’s heart rate without requiring them to wear wrist bands or other annoying accessories.

All of the data that’s collected by the bed over night is made available through a wirelessly connected smartphone app that lets both kids and parents analyse how good a night’s sleep the child actually had. And if they didn’t, the app allows the comfort level of the SleepIQ Kids Bed to be adjusted by inflating or deflating air chambers hidden inside the mattress to hopefully make it more comfortable.

But since comfort isn’t the only factor contributing to a good night’s sleep, the SleepIQ app can also be used to keep track of habits and activities before bedtime as well. This allows kids to see the effects that things like sports, or their diet, have on their sleep patterns. And if it’s an adverse effect, like eating mountains of candy before they try and fall asleep, the app will show how they toss and turn instead of actually drifting off.

The most important feature, or at least the one that could convince parents to spend about $US1,000 on the SleepIQ Kids bed when it’s available later this year, is the connected app’s Sleep Dashboard. Here parents can keep track of every SleepIQ bed in the house, and not just the nightly sleep patterns of everyone using them.

The app also features configurable alerts that can immediately let a parent know when a kid has gotten out of bed in the middle of the night. And to help combat a fear of the dark, which can be a big factor when it comes to kids getting a good night’s sleep, the SleepIQ has built-in lighting underneath that automatically illuminates when a kid gets out of bed. And it can be remotely turned off once they’re finally asleep, meaning you can help ensure your child falls asleep every night, without having to leave your own bed. Once that sinks in you’ll be reaching for your credit card. [Sleep Number]
