LG’s Got A New Fleet Of Colourful 4K TVs

LG will be showing off its latest lineup of 4K UHD televisions at CES next week with the promise of richer colours, thinner screens, and Harmon/Kardon audio. Now if we could just get some decent 4K content already, we’ll be set.

LG will be showcasing eight models at the trade show — specifically the spectacularly named UC9, UB9800, UF9500, UF9400, UF8500, UF7700, UF6800 and UF6700 — as well as a number of new panel features. These include Wide Colour LED or Quantum Dot technology, both of which supposedly increase colour depth compared to conventional LEDs and boost the available colour gamut by as much as 30 per cent.

What’s more, both of these systems require far less space than existing LED panels which means that the new sets will be nearly as slender as OLEDs — we’re talking panel depths measured in millimeters, not inches. Additionally, the new lineup will sport local dimming for better contrast and deeper blacks as well as a new Natural Colour feature to ensure highly accurate colour reproduction.

Five of the models — UC9, UB9800, UF9500, UF9400, and UF8500 — will ship with LG’s multi-channel ULTRA Surround System, developed with help from Harman/Kardon. They will also include the faster-booting WebOS 2.0 Smart TV platform, an HVEC decoder (for watching streaming 4K) that supports up to 60 fps, and a spiffy upscaler algorithm that boosts current generation video signals to near UHD quality.

We’ll have hands-on reports and first impressions of these sets direct from the show floor so stay tuned for updates.
