A group of hackers claiming to be responsible for the Sony hacks has offered Sony employees a small lifeline. If the company’s staff write to them, it claims, they won’t publish their emails online.
The offer has been made by Guardians of Peace in slightly broken English on Pastebin and Friendpaste. It explains:
“Message to SPE Staffers. We have a plan to release emails and privacy of the Sony Pictures employees. If you don’t want your privacy to be released, tell us your name and business title to take off your data.”
Of course, there’s no way of knowing if this is true, or what may happen to anyone who does write in. No doubt there are some people at Sony wondering very hard about that right now.
There is, apparently, another leak of data on the way according to the hackers, which will include more email correspondence made by Sony Pictures employees. For what it’s worth, the last leak contained a 6GB email archive belonging to Steve O’Dell, president of Sony Pictures Releasing International. The hackers refer to the forthcoming data dump as a “Christmas gift” that will contain “larger quantities of data. And it will be more interesting”. Ominous. [Re/code]
