Humble Rest Stops Are Endangered Monuments Of America’s Highways

All along America’s open highways are the sight of rest stops — lonesome, and often odd, miniature roadside parks that dot the landscape. Photographer Ryann Ford is on a mission to document these architectural emblems.

Ford was captivated by the sight of the rest stops while moving from California to Texas. After learning that many of these structures were in danger of being torn down, she decided to preserve their memory with some stunning photography. Ford even launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of a book of her findings.

So far, Ford has shot over 150 rest stops. Each one is quirky and unique in its own way, carrying with it the character of the specific location and an overall spirit of good old fashioned American roadtrippin’. The project definitely falls in line with the storied history of American road trip photography. If you like Ford’s work and want to see it in printed form, head over to her Kickstarter and pitch in! Editor’s Note: Clearly we have a thing for rest stop photography.
