Bloomberg: Sony Is Making A Watch Entirely Out Of E-Paper

Keen not to be outdone by Apple, perhaps, Sony is said to be making a new watch whose surfaces are entirely made from e-paper. It will, according to Bloomberg, “emphasise style, rather than trying to outdo more technological offerings.”

The news wire reports that the watch’s face and wrist band will be manufactured using a type of e-paper, allowing the whole thing to function as a display and change appearance on demand. It’s unclear what kind of e-paper the device would use, nor whether it would be colour or monochrome. Although, err, it doesn’t sound dissimilar to this watch that’s already being crowdfunded.

The project is apparently the first to come out of a new innovation centre set up by Sony CEO, Kaz Hirai. Intended to produce Sony’s next breakthrough product — the Walkman or PlayStation of its time — it’s not yet produced anything game changing.

Bloomberg suggests that the new e-paper watch could be available as soon as next year. As with any rumour like this tough, it’s worth taking a pinch of salt with that prediction. [Bloomberg]
