With HealthKit finally rolling out on iOS 8, users are anxiously anticipating which devices will sync with the health tracking app. Those who use Fitbit’s wide range of products are out of luck, as the company announced it will not integrate with Apple’s ecosystem, but rather, is working on its own new products.
According to comments posted in several forums, Fitbit made it pretty clear that they want to keep working on their own apps instead of working on HealthKit integration:
We do not currently have plans to integrate with HealthKit… It is an interesting new platform and we will watch as it matures, looking for opportunities to improve the Fitbit experience. At the moment, we’re working on other exciting projects that we think will be valuable to users.
As 9to5Mac points out, Fitbit was the first company mentioned in Apple’s original presentation that introduced HealthKit to the world, and seemed like a shoe-in for integration. While this comment seems pretty clear, I’ve reached out to Fitbit to see if they have an official statement. Now we’ll watch to see which other fitness trackers will step up to the plate, including what’s probably the most anticipated potential deal: A partnership with Nike that somehow takes the place of its doomed FuelBand.
