On the left, rows of small green squares. On the right, the code that brought them into being. Not pictured? The guy wearing the Oculus Rift headset, who’s making it all happen in real-time. Forget The Matrix. This is low-level deity stuff.
Brian Peiris is the man who made this happen, this live-coding web app that lets you summon objects into life and make them dance with a few strokes of the keyboard. It’s simple stuff he creates here, because coding creations while touch-typing in real time takes a lot of effort. But still! This seems to be the real promise of virtual reality, doesn’t it? Not playing in someone else’s predetermined world, but building your own from nothing.
You can try it out yourself if you’ve got on Oculus Rift DK2, comfort with JavaScript, and more than a passing affinity for Virtuosity. The code’s right here on GitHub. And if Peiris — or someone similarly inspired — can somehow someday make it collaborative, we might someday end up with a virtual world that Second Life can only dream of. [Kill Screen via Digg]
