There are certain spaces that we move in and out of so fast, and with so little thought, that we fail to absorb their visual makeup. One such place is the humble car wash, portrayed artfully in this series of photos by Mark Lyon.

After noticing the stark but interesting formal characteristics of these forgotten interiors, Lyon made it his project to visit and re-visit car washes in the northeast United States in order to capture just the right light seeping into the huge rectangular bays.

Some of the car washes look pristine (unexplainably), while others have seen the ravages of time. Each photo has its own potential for narrative with the interplay of inside and outside. They all have a striking feeling loneliness or alienation. Check out more of Mark Lyon’s work on his website. [via Slate]
