GoPro Hero 4 Rumours: 30fps 4K Video Capture And Touch LCD Coming Soon

A thread on Reddit rounds up a bunch of speculation swirling about the GoPro Hero 4, including images of the new action camera that look pretty legitimate. GoPro makes some of the most popular cameras in the world, so we’ll definitely see something eventually. At the very least these rumours are a good guess.

The Reddit thread compiles information from a variety of sources including accidentally leaked promotional materials, manuals, and firmware. Though we can’t be sure it’s all real, there’s enough consistency on certain probable upgrades that we’d call them a safe wager.

The key feature upgrade we’re seeing is that the Hero 4 will have 4K video capture at 30 fps. Though the Hero 3+ Black had 4K video capture, it only recorded at 15 fps, which is mostly useless. At the standard 30 fps, on the other hand, 4K footage would be a huge boon. Given the rising popularity of 4K video and displays, this would be an important improvement that might entice people to upgrade.

The camera’s overall size will reportedly be the same so that it still works with old accessories. Still, there will supposedly be some design changes the most important of which is a new touch LCD on the back of the camera that allows you to monitor your footage. Until now, GoPros have only had a small display on the front, and to monitor the footage, you’ve had to connect to a separate device.

Leaked photos such as the one above show a few other minor tweaks, like recoding and Wi-Fi indicator lights on the front of the camera.

There’s no way to know for sure if this is real until we hear it from the company, but these new features and specs seem pretty plausible. In the past, the company has refreshed its products towards the end of the year so it’s possible that we’ll see a new Hero soon. GoPro makes our favourite action cameras, so we’ll obviously be following with great interest when a refresh does eventually come along. [Reddit]
