The Oculus Rift is built for gaming. Despite rumours about Facebook talking with movie studios and Palmer Luckey’s appearance last week at SIGGRAPH 2014 hinting at other use cases for his VR headwear, the Rift will be a video game device for the foreseeable future.
But the growing evidence is undeniable. Companies are developing cameras to create films for the Rift’s 360-degree vantage point and directors are already taking the plunge. Although this question comes with a bit of retroactive camera foolery, what would be the first movie — if this was possible — you’d want to see reformatted for the Oculus Rift? Not in a program, such as VR Cinema 3D, but as a film made for VR from the ground up.
The first movie that came to my mind was 2001: A Space Odyssey. Ok sure, this might be an easy go-to answer. I mean who wouldn’t want to get their mind completely melted during the film’s closing minutes?
Woooooaaaahhhhhh
So let’s use a little creative licence and share what other films would be utterly amazing in beautiful 360 degrees.
